Working at one of our region's traditional manufacturing companies can be cool, especially when they have an administrative building as warm and welcoming as the one Ardex Engineered Cements built in Aliquippa, Beaver County. German-owned Ardex is hiring across a variety of skills. Administrative Assistant Julie Walsh talks about the benefits of a working at a smaller, globally-connected manufacturer.

    In the 1970s Sunil Wadhwani earned a master's degree at Carnegie Mellon, and never left. He co-founded IT/business solutions firm iGateCorp., the largest Indian-owned business based in the region in terms of employment, with more than 8,000 workers worldwide.
  • Pradeep K. Khosla, Ph.D.
    Pradeep K. Khosla, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Engineering and the Philip and Marsha Dowd University Professor at Carnegie Mellon, came to Pittsburgh in 1982. He talks with Bill Flanagan of "Our Region's Business" on WPXI-TV about his experience living and making a career here.
  • Prajna Paramita Parasher, Ph.D.
    Born in Shimla, India, award-winning artist and scholar, Dr. Prajna Paramita Parasher was educated in Paris as a filmmaker before coming to the United States to pursue a Ph.D. Today she calls Pittsburgh home as director of the Film and Digital Technology program at Chatham University as well as an associate professor of art, film and cultural studies. Her highly-acclaimed, visionary achievements have been presented at world-class venues including the Smithsonian Institution, the Nehru Center in London and the Tagore Center in Berlin.
  • Vijay S. Gorantla, M.D., Ph.D.
    Vijay S. Gorantla, M.D., Ph.D.,is Associate Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and Administrative Medical Director of the Pittsburgh Reconstructive Transplant Program at UPMC. He discusses with Bill Flanagan of "Our Region's Business" the cutting-research that attracted him to the region in 2007 and its thriving Indian community.

On Saturday, April 16, 50 teams comprising some of the most innovative minds from southwestern Pennsylvania's high schools and technical schools competed in the sixth annual BotsIQ competition.

    Robots from almost 50 teams from high school and technical schools throughout southwestern Pennsylvania battled at the sixth annual BotsIQ competition in Youngwood, Westmoreland County. The competition, part of Imagine Careers Week, encourages young people to imagine careers in manufacturing.
  • Hamill Manufacturing CEO Jeff Kelly
    Hamill Manufacturing CEO Jeff Kelly discusses with Bill Flanagan of "Our Region's Business" the importance of training a new generation of skilled workers for manufacturing and how the BotsIQ competition can help. Kelly brought the competition to the region in 2006 when he was chair of the National Tooling & Machining Association.
